You don't need a referral to see a psychologist. However, if you would like to obtain a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP), you'll need to visit your GP. Let the clinic’s reception know that you are making an appointment for a MHCP as a longer appointment may be necessary to allow time for discussion and assessment.
During your appointment, your doctor will ask you some questions to understand why you are seeking a referral and to help them recommend the best course of action for your mental health. They may also request that you complete a short assessment which evaluates how you’re feeling.
A MHCP is a referral that allows you to receive a Medicare rebate on psychology sessions. With a MHCP, you can access six subsidised psychological therapy sessions covered by Medicare. Once you've used your initial six sessions, you can return to your GP for a MHCP review. This allows you to access an additional four subsidised sessions.

Payment is made via Bank Transfer on the day of your appointment. You will receive an invoice with the payment details straight after your session. If you have a current Mental Health Care Plan, the medicare rebate will be processed immediately after payment has been received.
